The Possible Present

Progress City

“The EPCOT system features trains consisting of four attached cars, with each car seating up to four guests. The trains are much larger than either the Disneyland or Magic Kingdom versions. The ‘headway time,’ the waiting time until the next vehicle arrives, is a mere three minutes. If a train is not already at the station, a rider can press a button and it will signal one to come. If the demand decreases, surplus trains move back into the roundhouse.

This type of transportation system has an even deeper significance to the success of EPCOT. According to Michael Sorkin, ‘The driverless people-mover—its motions seemingly dictated by the invisible hand, mechanical creature of supply and demand—is a symbol of this economic fantasy of perfect self-government.'”
