Wanted: Global Warming Data Masseuse
'Cap and Trade Is Dead'I'm a little late to the party but it's just one more example of how out of touch Nancy/Harry/MSM are. Or are they? The reality is that global warming, just like the "crises" in health care and the economy, offer her ilk the opportunity to enlarge the scale/scope of government. Frankly, I think Nancy eats paste and probably "believes" the "science" of global warming. This is the Speaker of the House who accused the CIA of lying (but we're making jobs).
The more than 3,000 emails and documents from the University of East Anglia's Climate Research Unit (CRU) that have found their way to the Internet have blown the lid off the "science" of manmade global warming. CRU is a nerve center for many of those researchers who have authored the United Nations' global warming reports and fueled the political movement to regulate carbon.
Their correspondence show a claque of scientists massaging data to make it fit their theories, squelching scientists who disagreed, punishing academic journals that didn't toe the apocalyptic line, and hiding their work from public view. "It's no use pretending that this isn't a major blow," glumly wrote George Monbiot, a U.K. writer who has been among the fiercest warming alarmists. The documents "could scarcely be more damaging." And that's from a believer.
This scandal has real implications. Mr. Inhofe notes that international and U.S. efforts to regulate carbon were already on the ropes. The growing fear of Democrats and environmentalists is that the CRU uproar will prove a tipping point, and mark a permanent end to those ambitions.

Obama's Hammer and Sickle
Obama climate czar has socialist tiesRelated
Group sees 'global governance' as solution
(The Washington Times)
Until last week, Carol M. Browner, President-elect Barack Obama's pick as global warming czar, was listed as one of 14 leaders of a socialist group's Commission for a Sustainable World Society, which calls for "global governance" and says rich countries must shrink their economies to address climate change.
By Thursday, Mrs. Browner's name and biography had been removed from Socialist International's Web page, though a photo of her speaking June 30 to the group's congress in Greece was still available.
Socialist International, an umbrella group for many of the world's social democratic political parties such as Britain's Labor Party, says it supports socialism and is harshly critical of U.S. policies.
Obama's Radical Climate Czar Scrubbed From Socialist Websites
It synchs with this lefty op-ed piece in WSJ calling for a consumption tax.
No taxpayer looks forward to paying more. But the inevitability of higher taxes offers an overdue chance to change the debate. Though it may seem hard to imagine now, the endless fights about whether taxes should go up will soon seem passé. The real question once this recession has passed will be: Given that taxes have to rise, how should we raise the revenue we need in ways that are best for the economy? The answer will involve lower taxes on payrolls and corporations, and higher taxes on dirty energy and consumption.

I ♥ Adam Smith
Newt received some static from the right about his outspokenness and responded on his site:
Many of you have written to me to ask why I recently taped an advertisement with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for The Alliance for Climate Protection, a group founded by former Vice President Al Gore. But beyond being at the table for this debate, conservatives should be wrestling this issue from liberals before, as this article warns, it's used to advance completely unrelated issues like domestic partnerships and multicultural competence (what does that even mean).
I completely understand why many of you would have questions about this, so I want to take this opportunity to explain my reasons. First of all, I want to be clear: I don't think that we have conclusive proof of global warming. And I don't think we have conclusive proof that humans are at the center of it.
But here's what we do know. There is an important debate going on right now over the right energy policy, the right environmental policy, and making sure we do the right things for our future and the future of our children and grandchildren. Conservatives are missing from this debate, and I think that's a mistake. When it comes to preserving our environment for future generations, we can't have a slogan of "Just yell no!"
There's no doubt the environment is an issue championed by liberals primarily as an opportunity to extend the size and scope of government. Conservatives need to provide the public with alternatives that promote conservation (environmental stewardship) without legions of bureaucrats, thousands of new laws and burdensome taxes.
I'm waiting for the first hybrid candidate. A conservative driving a SMART car with an "I ♥ Adam Smith" bumper sticker who can remind voters that conservation is part of our canon and that environmental stewardship flourishes in a society that promotes private property, free enterprises, and individual rights.

St. Albert: Repent Sinner!
Bono confesses sins to 'father' Al GoreAcknowledging that a career in rock music was not always conducive to a green lifestyle, Bono compared a conversation with Gore to an act of religious contrition.
"It's like being with an Irish priest. You start to confess your sins," he said. "Father Al, I am not just a noise polluter, I am a noise-polluting, diesel-soaking, gulfstream-flying rock star.
"I'm going to kick the habit. I'm trying father Al, but oil has been very good for me -- those convoys of articulated lorries, petrochemical products, hair gel."
Bono and Gore were in Davos to push their respective campaigns for poverty alleviation and reducing carbon emissions.

Long for this world...
Welcome to the July-December edition of the Connecticut Natural Pages®.
Finally we are addressing the issues of Global Warming!
Human neglect and abuse of the environment has resulted in the extinction of thousands of animal and plant species, as well as the proliferation of birth defects, cancer, allergies, and asthma-just to name a few. But global warming is the first malady that has garnered planetary attention.
So why global warming? Because it affects every single one of us now and in the future, and there is no getting around it. This is the most profound time in our existence. At no time in history have people of all races, religions, beliefs,
philosophies, nationalities, political affiliations, status and income levels shared the same common experience.
The earth is sick from what we humans have done to it. Just as the human body rises in temperature to kill pathogens, the planet is warming to rid the planet of pathogens. We humans are those pathogens. We are making our planet uninhabitable for humans. The message is clear-Either we change, or we're toast!
But before we can change, if we are truly going to reverse this self-destructive course we are on, we must address the root causes. We must face the truth of our destructive behaviors, take inventory of our patterns of destruction, to figure out why we are doing this to ourselves so that we can reverse course.
I believe global warming is a spiritual disease-a crisis of connection to spirit. We are moving so fast that we have lost our connection to ourselves, each other and the earth. The remedy lies in slowing down, paying attention, re-connecting.
Collectively, we can shine a light on the darkest part of ourselves and address what we see and truly heal and live the glorious life that is here to live right now. We have the opportunity to come together as a human family and transform from living a life separate from, fearful of, and competitive with each other, to one being connected, cooperative, compassionate, giving and loving.
In Love and Light,
Jerome Rubin

Terms of Endearment
But instead, Friedman consults lefty-friend and alternative energy expert Nate Lewis of the California Institute of Technology, who stokes Friedman’s fear.
"Did we do that?....Did we make it hot or did she (Mother Nature) make it hot? Did we make that drought or did she make that drought? Is man's cumulative impact on the climate now as responsible for the weather as Mother Nature herself?” Friedman hyperventilates.
"That is the question Katrina really introduced for the first time," says Lewis, "the sense that soon, if not already, what we used to call acts of God are really acts of man."
Actually, what Friedman and Lewis are experiencing isn’t climate change at all. It’s called paranoia.

The Congrats Due by Mark R. LevinJack M. over at Ace deserves an honorable mention.
I'd like to add my name to those congratulating Al Gore for his peace prize. Frankly, I can't think of anyone who has done more to bring peace to this world - from Rwanda to the Sudan, from Burma to North Korea - than Al Gore. And what a selfless man. He always avoids media attention, preferring to direct accolades to the little people who do all the heavy lifting behind the scenes. And like Mother Teresa, Al Gore eschews materialism and luxury, despite his enormous wealth from oil and technology stocks. I hear tell that he insists on flying older private jets to his six-figure speeches. What a guy! I just wish there was another honor somebody could bestow on Al Gore — as long as it's not president.

This whole "Nobel" thing is nothing more than liberals awarding liberals for being liberals.
My own comments (I couldn't resist). Al (Hillary and Bill) are like the pigs in Animal Farm. In fact, any of those Davos attendees eat from the same trough [a long, narrow, open receptacle, usually boxlike in shape, used chiefly to hold water or food for animals.].
While a gaggle of fabulously wealthy (and self-important) people, aided by an army of central planners, enact volumes of laws to curtail global warming, your standard of living (not to mention personal freedom) will more closely resemble the freedoms women enjoy under Sharia law.
If Al does deserve an award it's as a (a Goebbels) propagandist. I've watched very smart adults crumple in fear at his movie, maybe quite willing to allow Al and his fellow Davos pals to make decisions on their behalf.
Best Defense of Economic Freedom
Nearly all policies associated with global warming "solutions" are inimical to economic growth, prosperity, and progress.Update
In addition, the "solutions" have a heavy governmental footprint. It all smacks of central planning. It is the opposite of the economic freedom and free-market capitalism that has shown us the path to prosperity. I don't want limits to growth and I don't want central planning. Instead, I want entrepreneurship and freedom and Schumpeterian gales of creative destruction.

The article Jonah Goldberg wrote about Couric complements this post since global warming is just one (1) of the causes cosmopolitans (secularists) extol.
Also, Couric isn't smart enough to understand her bit part in this drama. She's spent a lifetime being indoctrinated so her reaction to an American Flag (or Hillary recoiling at the site of a cross) is the same as an anorexics reflexive gag when they see or smell food.

Sorry Al...
This survey data is important because it underpins my theory that globalists and bureaucrats (communists) will struggle (meet resistance) to increase the size and scope of government (although this doesn't seem to be the case in the UK) if they can't convince the public that we're the primary cause of it. It looks like common sense may prevail if these stats hold against larger samples, etc.
Three Quarters Believe Global Warming A 'Natural Occurrence'
ALMOST three quarters of people believe global warming is a 'natural occurrence' and not a result of carbon emissions, a survey claimed today.
This goes against the views of the vast majority of scientists who believe the rise in the earth's temperatures is due to pollution.

I think the white house should have a global warming summit. Have lots of bottled water and booze. And hand out one square of TP to the ladies as they go into the ladies room. They can get 2 or 3 if they provide proof of "pesky" issues. That liberals believe that they can make pronouncements from on high on how the little people should behave never ceases to amaze. Here's one for the "do as I say, not as I do" file and it complements the above quote very nicely.

"Tinkering with God’s creation"
Hillary Clinton addressed the First Baptist Church of Selma, Alabama yesterday, to mark the 42nd anniversary of the famous march from Selma to Montgomery. Her speeches have been getting better lately, and her style more easy and less stiff. But this speech was definitely an exception—it would be best described as a bizarre and embarrassing extended imitation of her husband, complete with a (fake, in her case) southern accent. But perhaps the most peculiar point she made was actually in a passing reference to global warming, as one of a number of issues demanding action today. Global warming, she said, was dangerous because it was an instance of “tinkering with God’s creation.” This is really the epitome of environmentalism as religion. And you have to wonder what it means for her opinion of, say, human cloning for research.

You can't have it both ways...
On Monday morning, TXU Corporation, the Texas-based electric power utility, announced it would be taken private in a record-breaking $45 billion deal. Normally that kind of blockbuster would be bullish -- it demonstrates that stocks are cheap and that money to buy them is plentiful.
But by the end of the day the happy news flow about TXU had started to focus on an inconvenient truth. The company announced it was scrapping plans to build eleven coal-fired power generating plants, to head off lawsuits from environmental groups that would interfere with the $45 billion deal getting completed.
One such group, the National Resources Defense Council, bragged that TXU's decision proved "the business community…can't simply ignore global warming and come up with sound business strategies."
Yes, God forbid that business should come up with sound strategies. Better to come up with unsound ones, such as scrapping eleven coal plants. Never mind that those coal plants could actually have been run as cleanly as any other kind, and a lot more cheaply.

Al Gore's 'Inconvenient Truth'? -- $30,000 utility bill
Armed with Gore's utility bills for the last two years, the Tennessee Center for Policy Research charged Monday that the gas and electric bills for the former vice president's 20-room home and pool house devoured nearly 221,000 kilowatt-hours in 2006, more than 20 times the national average of 10,656 kilowatt-hours.
"If this were any other person with $30,000-a-year in utility bills, I wouldn't care," says the Center's 27-year-old president, Drew Johnson. "But he tells other people how to live and he's not following his own rules."

Best post of the day...maybe the month
It was written by Dean Barnett (the FAQ guy) and it's about the Goracle. Some highlights:
AS REGARDS AL GORE’S PREDICTIONS OF IMMINENT climatic disaster, I must confess that I haven’t made a careful enough study of the matter to have a well-educated opinion. Unlike, say, Leonardo DiCaprio, I just haven’t had the time or the intellectual curiosity to read all the source studies that doubtlessly inform the conclusions of the Hollywood-types who feel the end is nigh.
It sounds to me like a full implementation of a Gore plan would trigger a recession. If we’re lucky. Economic misfortune means less money for fun stuff like healthcare, welfare, social security and national defense. Serious economic dislocation, even in the United States, cost millions of lives. Has the Goracle calculated these things? More importantly, has Leonardo DiCaprio? If they have, I’d like to take a look at the figures.
I would submit that an individual who has worked himself into a lather the last several years because he’s convinced the world is imminently coming to an end is unlikely to be the most optimistic guy in a two man race.

For goodness sake, will somebody actually get honest with these kids and tell them there's been no increase in the last 5 years - perhaps you don't want to be honest in fear that you'll lose your audience.

Global Farce II
"Meanwhile humility in face of Nature’s marvels seems more appropriate than arrogant assertions that we can forecast and even control a climate ruled by the sun and the stars."When politicians and journalists declare that the science of global warming is settled, they show a regrettable ignorance about how science works. We were treated to another dose of it recently when the experts of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change issued the Summary for Policymakers that puts the political spin on an unfinished scientific dossier on climate change due for publication in a few months’ time. They declared that most of the rise in temperatures since the mid-20th century is very likely due to man-made greenhouse gases.

Rise peeps, rise.
Yesterday, Tony Snow came out and said what we’ve been wishing he’d do for ages – that Europe’s performance in restricting carbon dioxide emissions since 2000 has been worse than America’s. Of course, the Democrats and greens have been apoplectic at this praise of America and denigration of their beloved Europe and have issued charts showing how America’s performance since 1990 and 1995 has been worse than Europe’s. True, but that’s not what Tony Snow said. Since 2000, and you can see this if you look at the charts they’ve put out, Europe’s CO2 emissions have clearly risen faster than America’s. The only reason Europe looks better when you include the 1990s is that the baselines chosen include the British dash-for-gas, when North Sea gas replaced coal as the source of most of Britain’s electricity, and the closure of the East German smokestack industries. And that’s precisely why the EU foisted a 1990 baseline on the world at the Kyoto negotiations in 1997. Now that the gains from those two one-off events have disappeared, Europe’s advantage has disappeared. The response is just a Jedi mind trick, or a three-card monty, if you’d prefer.
One other thing the charts reveal is that US emissions rose much faster under President Clinton than under President Bush. There was someone else in the Clinton administration, wasn’t there? I wonder who that was.

Melting Ice Cap Factoids
Skeptics are heckled for calling attention to global warming scare tactics. But the simple fact is that activists need to hype the threat, and not just because that's what the media demand of them. Their proposed remedies cost so much money - bidding starts at 1 percent of global GDP a year and rises quickly - they have to ratchet up the fear factor just to get the conversation started.
The costs are just too high for too little payoff. Even if the Kyoto Protocol were put into effect tomorrow - a total impossibility - we'd barely affect global warming. Jerry Mahlman of the National Center for Atmospheric Research speculated in Science magazine that "it might take another 30 Kyotos over the next century" to beat back global warming.
Thirty Kyotos! That's going to be tough considering that China alone plans on building an additional 2,200 coal plants by 2030. Oh, but because China (like India) is exempt from Kyoto as a developing country, the West will just have to reduce its own emissions even more.

Global Farce
According to David at the DAVID ALL GROUP, Al deserves tremendous props for his communication mastery.
"So this morning, before I came here, I was reading a Rolling Stone article about how great and cool Al Gore is this time around, how he owns the global warming issue, and how he has popularized the issue with the mainstream. Every day I read another newspaper headline about global warming. The problem you all have is not that we don’t agree with you - your problem is that the issue is no longer an academic argument - it has crossed in to the mainstream and it’s now ‘cool’ to want to ’stop’ global warming."I view this positively. Once something becomes mainstream the clock (for relevancy) starts ticking. And if "global warming" goes the way of the OC (or the hula hoop), we may never have to risk exposure to Al in blue jeans on the cover of Rolling Stone again.

Global Warming: A wolf in sheep's clothing
Global Warming Equals Socialism
For decades, environmentalism has been the Left's best excuse for increasing government control over our actions in ways both large and small.
"It's for Mother Earth! It's for the children! It's for the whales! But until now, the doomsday-scenario environmental scares they've trumped up haven't been large enough to give the sinister prize they want most of all: total control of American politics, economic activity, and even individual behavior.
"With global warming, however, greenhouse gasbags can argue that auto emissions in Ohio threaten people in Paris, and that only global government can tackle such problems. National sovereignty? Democracy? Forget it: global warming has now brought the Left closer to global government, statism, and the eradication of individual rights than it has ever been before."
"Global warming is the ideal scare campaign for those who are doing all they can to secure strict control over society, business, and the minutest details of individual life." As Horner explains, "if global warming really were as bad as the Leftist doomsayers insist it is, then no policy imaginable could 'solve' it . . . no matter how much we sacrifice there would still be more to do. That makes global warming the bottomless well of excuses for the relentless growth of Big Government."

Kyoto Protocol: Clinton I had it right
The consensus catechism about global warming has six tenets: 1. Global warming is happening. 2. It is our (humanity's, but especially America's) fault. 3. It will continue unless we mend our ways. 4. If it continues we are in grave danger. 5. We know how to slow or even reverse the warming. 6. The benefits from doing that will far exceed the costs. The Law of Unintended Consequences
Only the first tenet is clearly true, and only in the sense that the Earth warmed about 0.7 degrees Celsius in the 20th century. We do not know the extent to which human activity caused this.
Nothing Americans can do to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions will make a significant impact on the global climate while every 10 days China fires up a coal-fueled generating plant big enough to power San Diego. China will construct 2,200 new coal plants by 2030.
President Clinton and his earnest vice president knew better than to seek ratification of Kyoto by a Senate that had passed its resolution of disapproval 95-0. Fifty-six of those 95 senators are still serving. Two of them are John Kerry and Barbara Boxer. That is an inconvenient truth.
My favorite part of the article demonstrates very clearly WHY government interference via mandates, tariffs and subsidies will NEVER work. The government mandate to use ETHANOL has created a corn shortage that is driving up its price. The solution:
Forests will be felled (will fewer trees mean more global warming?) to clear land for growing corn, which requires fertilizer, the manufacture of which requires energy.

Eat this Chicken Little!
Believe it or not, Global Warming is not due to human contribution of Carbon Dioxide (CO2). This in fact is the greatest deception in the history of science. We are wasting time, energy and trillions of dollars while creating unnecessary fear and consternation over an issue with no scientific justification.**Update**
I once received a three page letter that my lawyer defined as libellous, from an academic colleague, saying I had no right to say what I was saying, especially in public lectures. Sadly, my experience is that universities are the most dogmatic and oppressive places in our society. This becomes progressively worse as they receive more and more funding from governments that demand a particular viewpoint.
Until you have challenged the prevailing wisdom you have no idea how nasty people can be. Until you have re-examined any issue in an attempt to find out all the information, you cannot know how much misinformation exists in the supposed age of information.

Global Warming Debate
John Derbyshire, for example, has a voice that resonates:
I'm a math guy; I want sixteen significant digits. With GW research you're lucky to get two.**UPDATE**
Yes, we're going through a warming spell. Yes, it's got an anthropogenic component—quite likely a large one. And yes, the shrieking catastrophists of the enviro-Left are exceedingly annoying, and they are reaching for our wallets in the hopes of raising up a whole new category of tax-eaters. Beyond that, I wouldn't bet my house on anything.
Randall's conclusion—that "we have several quite compelling reasons to take steps to bring the fossil fuel era to an earlier end"—is surely sound. GW aside, surely the sweetest dream of every American (Englishman, German, Japanese,...) right now is to be able to tell the Middle East Muslims: "Thanks for all the oil, but we won't be needing any more. You guys can go back to herding goats."

More than 1,000 people attended the town hall meeting, which began with a presentation on climate change by singer-songwriter Kathy Mattea. She was one of 50 entertainers trained by former Vice President Al Gore to speak about scientists' findings on global warming. Gore's global warming documentary, "An Inconvenient Truth," screened at Park City's Sundance Film Festival last year.

Sunday Blog Review
My favorite is this article in Townhall.com by Paul Driessen titled, Climate McCarthyism and Eco-Inquisitions: Censoring news and views to advance ideologies and legislation.
Here are some excerpts:
Al Gore wants to muzzle anyone who raises inconvenient truths about climate alarmism. Greenpeace wants “climate criminals” pilloried and silenced.Al Gore wants to muzzle anyone who raises inconvenient truths about climate alarmism. Greenpeace wants “climate criminals” pilloried and silenced.
It is, above all, an unprecedented power grab by activists, politicians and bureaucrats who want to be the final arbiters of every energy and economic decision.
Cataclysm theorists point to computer models. But models are not evidence. Neither are headlines, hype or Hollywood special effects – nor incessant claims that every storm, drought, heat wave or cold snap is due to fossil fuels.
Carbon taxes, carbon caps, greenhouse gas targets and timetables would send already high energy prices into the stratosphere, raise the cost of every consumer product and service, reduce profits, impair productivity, stifle innovation – and drive numerous jobs overseas, to countries where energy is still available and priced lower. Simply put, no juice – no jobs.
Let’s hope the march toward totalitarian government ends, wisdom prevails, and we again place our faith in American optimism, creativity, innovation and true social responsibility.
